On the 8th May 2025, at ONDM 2025, the ICON Project will co-organise the Optical Communication and Sensing (OCandS) Roadmap Workshop — a strategic session exploring the integration of communication networks and sensing technologies.

Co-chairs
Aleksandra Kaszubowska-Anandarajah – Trinity College Dublin
Steinar Bjørnstad – Tampnet

Organised by
The IEEE INGR Optics Working Group and the ICON Project, funded by the European Commission (project 101189703)

With contributions from Tampnet, Trinity College Dublin, and Adtran

This workshop will examine the 2024 edition of the IEEE International Network Generations Roadmap (INGR) optics chapter, addressing how optical communication systems — including submarine, metro, and access networks — can evolve into large-scale platforms for environmental and infrastructure sensing. Key topics include:

  • The integration of optical sensing into communication networks
  • Emerging technologies and applications across various timeframes
  • Enhancing fibre infrastructure resilience and security
  • Data management and hybrid system control challenges
  • Sensing opportunities in subsea, metro, indoor, and urban contexts

The workshop will feature presentations from leading experts, followed by an in-depth panel discussion focused on identifying future research directions and breakthrough opportunities.
